WORLD CUP 2014 COMMENCES
After
all the seemingly long wait, the World Cup, BRAZIL 2014 kicked of yesterday and
wow, was it a grand opening. There was arguably the most interesting opening
ceremony in World Cup history through great vegetation and cultural display,
nice choreography, the usual beautiful Latina chicks and an even greater
performance by Pitbull and J.Lo. Hmm, J.Lo. Despite the
uncertainties, the opening ceremony was a success even though the stadium is
not fully completed. The performances and eventually the much awaited first
game over shadowed the whole issue about the stadium not being completed on
time. Now I wonder what articles in the media would have been if an African country
was hosting an occasion as grand as the world cup in an uncompleted
structure.#africa abr3.
That
notwithstanding, what an action pack first game! The game lived up to
expectation and you got to admire the support from the Brazilian fans. At a
point, you couldn’t tell whether the Brazilian anthem had stopped playing or
the voice of the fans had actually over shadowed the sound coming from the
stadium speakers. Throughout the game, it was pretty obvious which team wanted
it more. Surprisingly, the host nation conceded the first goal of the tournament
and the irony here is that, the goal scorer was Brazilian. But you can’t blame
Marcelo for turning the goal into his own net can you? Those kinds of crosses
are quite difficult to deal with. Michael Essien, John Arne Riise, Richard Dunn
and a lot of other defenders will testify to that.
Three
interesting facts about World Cup 2014 so far.
1.
Brazil have scored all goals of
the tournament so far. And yes, one for the opponent.
2.
Brazil earned the first yellow
card of the tournament as well as,
3.
The first penalty of the
tournament.
Considering
the heat of the first game, one can anticipate the outcome and the engrossing nature
of the rest of the matches.
I
can’t wait for Ghana’s first game against the USA. #y33korsemifinals
